I love this piece! I always have trouble explaining to friends why I'm done with traveling, as like you, I have chosen a few places to call home and cycle through. :) I'll be sending them this link the next time it comes up again.
I was hoping you could help share some insight: I'm curious, as you're based in NYC, where do you stay when you're there? Is it Airbnbs or short-term rentals, sublets or staying with family or another option althogehter? I also took a sabbatical and I'm now based in Europe in some seasons and in Asia the rest. I'm looking to specifically add new York to the mix and hope you can share some insight.
When I'm in NYC, it's usually a sublet. In the past, I would look Airbnb of FB groups, but now I just post on my instagram story and hope that a friend or a friend of a friend will sublet to me. It's worked out pretty well so far. The key is that people are looking to sublet out their place but will only do so if they feel like they can trust the other person.
> When I’m traveling, I seek to understand more of the external world. The foreignness that’s present in the food, language, and culture is intentionally sought after. When I’m living (which I guess is whenever I’m not traveling), it’s more about understanding myself. Could I see myself here for years to come? What kind of person am I when I’m here?
yeah I think of it in the same way, sorta realize it whether you want to or not when you try to do deep work while traveling and it's always so hard to mentally be in the right state for that
I've skied all over the west (Montana, WY, UT, CO, Tahoe, Mammoth) and think it'll be Tahoe for the foreseeable future. Tahoe is close enough to the Bay where my family and lots of friends are so skiing in Tahoe actually feels like I still get to maintain those relationships whereas skiing somewhere else would feel more isolating and solely focused on skiing.
Didn't realize we had moved to NYC at the same time! Loved your reflection on how you've found your version of home. As someone who moved around a lot when they were young, I don't know if uprooting homes is for me, but I think living across multiple places might be a better fit. Lots of things to chew on here!
Tbh not that much harder. I feel like the first couple of years doing what you’re doing now were harder. It’s kind of like a skill to travel and move well

Love this about traveling vs living

Ahhh I love this! Describes where I’m at in life perfectly. Makes me feel less alone in my choices. Thanks for putting this out there.
The big question is: how do you pick the next ski destination?! hahah

It's also a lot cheaper in Tahoe via ski lease than Airbnb somewhere else
Living seasonally (whether that's a life season or one that follows the weather) feels so RIGHT to me. Loved this read!
thanks man, yeah "seasonal" can refer to the external natural world or the internal world for sure
